New Types of Leaders

There are more books, articles, lectures and seminars on leadership today than ever before, and, and perhaps because, exemplary leaders are few and far between, both in business and in politics. What is the reason for this? Today’s leaders are struggling to cope with multiple pressures, globalisation, instant communication, increasing competition and higher staff and public expectations. So much so that the old definition of what constitutes leadership is no longer good enough. Here are some pointers to the leadership qualities required by the new generation of leader.
  1. A global vision and a sense of responsibility for the whole system.
  2. A long-term vision and a sense of responsibility for future generations.
  3. An understanding of the need for environmental sustainability.
  4. A duty of care for staff, customers, stakeholders and the community.
  5. Agility and the capacity to change direction in response to new criteria.
  6. An inclusive consciousness based on Trust rather than Fear as before.
  7. The capacity to inspire by example and by virtue of values alignment.
  8. Emotional literacy leading to humility, and minimal ego needs.
  9. A willingness to admit mistakes and not to blame mistakes of others.
  10. A commitment to the personal development of self and others.

The successful leader of the future will lead in a style similar to the core principles of coaching that are Awareness (of self, of others and of situations) and Responsibility (for action, for failures and for successes). Author/researcher Jim Collins in his seminal book, Good to Great, identifies the rarely attained top level of leadership as being a combination of Humility and Passion which equate well to Awareness and Responsibility.

One further capacity required by future leaders is the ability to instil a sense of self-belief in all who he or she leads. Self-belief is the life blood of performers, something that is sadly neglected, or even discouraged, in our parenting and education experience. Building self-belief in others demands coaching and inspiring others with humility.

Jack Welch, your time is past. Social evolution has brought humanity to the point at which we can no longer afford to wait for great leaders to take us to the promised land. We have to own our own power and become leaders all in a world too complex and too fluid for traditional leadership. We all have leadership capability in our hearts; we need to evoke it and apply it each in our own sphere of influence if together we are to create businesses, nations and a world that works for everyone.

IHE is committed to providing the guidance, the training, the programs to develop excellence in the leadership qualities of those who are already in leadership positions, and of all the rest of us who aspire to make a difference in a world that needs us now. This newsletter will introduce you each quarter to leaders in a variety of fields by way of inspiration and encouragement for you to reach a step beyond what you thought was possible.
